The Claremont Museum of Art gala was a huge success. Over 200 guests visited the extraordinary home of Dr. Gerald and Barbara Friedman in Padua Hills and enjoyed a lovely summer dinner by Spaggi's.
Home to the Sheets family in 1940s-60s, the house burned in the 2003 wildfire. Working from the original Millard Sheet plans, the Friedmans rebuilt the house, which features stunning architecture, expansive patios and a sweeping view of the foothills. Millard Sheets was one of the most important and influential artists to emerge from the fertile Pomona Valley. For many Claremonters, this was their first visit to see this well known house reincarnated.
Following dinner, the Sheets' son Tony and daughter Carolyn shared stories of their life in Padua Hills with us. Neighbor James Dorst won the raffle grand prize, a mid-century lithograph by Millard Sheets and Carolyn Sheets Owen-Towle was on hand to sign her recent book, DAMNGORGEOUS: A Daughter's Memoir of Millard Owen Sheets.
